By removing plaque and debris, flossing lowers your risk of tooth decay. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar, a substance that contains a high concentration of bacteria and is responsible for causing cavities and gum disease. By flossing around your gum line and between your teeth every day, you can remove plaque before it turns into tartar.

Flossing reaches parts of your mouth that a toothbrush can’t access. Brushing your teeth goes a long way in preventing tooth decay, but it can only clean about 2/3 of any tooth, leaving the final third vulnerable to cavities. Flossing is the only dental habit that can clean the third part of the tooth.
